The Strategic Mind Behind Inside A Business:Jason Rutherford
Jason Michael Rutherford was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1982. He grew up in a household where business and strategic thinking were core values. His father was a corporate management consultant while his mother ran a mid-sized logistics business. From an early age, Jason was exposed to business planning sessions, financial reporting discussions, and management philosophies that sparked his interest in how organizations operate internally.
In high school, Jason participated in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), placing first in regional competitions for business analysis and operational strategy. His academic ambitions led him to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, one of the United States’ premier institutions for business education. During his degree program, Jason excelled in courses related to organizational systems, operational efficiency, and strategic management.
After graduating in 2004, he joined a national corporate advisory firm in Chicago, focusing on operational restructuring and business process optimization for mid-market companies. Over the next decade, Jason worked hands-on with leadership teams across manufacturing, technology, retail, and service industries—gaining a deep understanding of the internal mechanics that determine whether businesses succeed or stagnate.
By 2015, he noticed a major gap in online business education: most mainstream business websites focused on market news, trends, or general entrepreneurship motivation, but not on the inner processes that truly power a successful company—systems, workflows, leadership mechanisms, operational structures, and business models.
Driven by this insight, Jason began developing a publication dedicated to revealing “the inside of business”—real operational insights that entrepreneurs, small-business owners, and professionals could use to strengthen their organizations. After two years of planning and refining content frameworks, he launched Inside A Business in 2017.
Today, Jason serves as Editor-in-Chief, overseeing the publication’s content standards and ensuring the site remains a trusted source for practical, operation-focused business education.
